What is Carburettor? Drawbacks of the carburettor system.
In this article, we are going to see the drawbacks of the carburettor system in SI engines. There are various reasons for using the gasoline injection system over the carburettor system.
What is Carburettor?
A carburetor creates the proper air and fuel
mixture for combustion to take place in the IC engine. You can find it directly
mounted in front of the inlet port of an IC engine. The first carburetor was
invented by an American scientist, Samuel Morey.
Drawbacks of the carburettors system:
- In the carburetor system, there are restrictions on the combination of waft throughout the venturi tube and different metering units in the air passage. It causes low volumetric efficacy in the carburetor.
- The distribution of air-fuel mixture to the cylinder in multi-cylinder engines is non-uniform, causing resistance to air-fuel mixture to float at consumption manifolds.
- Increasing or lowering load on the engines impacts the air-fuel ratio. The AF ratio adjustments occur when the load on the engine changes.
- At low load and idle conditions, the engine wishes for extra fuel, which is no longer cheap in contrast to the fuel injection system.
- The use of compression (C.R.) ratio in the carburetor device is limited.
- Backfiring at low speed is always a possibility in a multi-cylinder engine.
- Emission at the exhaust is high, which is not good for our lovely environment.
- In the winter season, the carburetor system faces ice formation issues due to low temperatures.
- The working of the carburetor can be affected by changes in the atmospheric pressure.
- The maintenance cost of a carburetor is higher than that of a fuel injection system.
- The carburetor is heavier than the fuel injector. It absorbs more fuel.
Why the fuel injection system?
In the modern-day vehicle industry, most of the
groups use the gas injection device in SI engines. There is the availability of
more environmentally friendly carburetors, which are very low-priced and
dependable, on the market; still, most of the vehicle groups use the fuel
injection device over the carburetor system. From this article, you can learn
about the drawbacks of carburetors over the gasoline injection system.
