    What is an engine's capacity?

     

    Engine capacity is the volume, or in other words, the space available inside the cylinder to accommodate air or an air/fuel mixture for burning.

     

    The engine capacity is measured in litters, which correspond to cubic centimetres.

    Engine capacity is also known as "engine displacement."

     

    This simply means the volume of air or air - fuel mixture the piston can induce inside the cylinder as it moves from TDC to BDC in the engine's one cycle.

     

    1000 cc = 1.0 litre.

     

    So if an engine has a 2 liter capacity, this means that all the cylinders combined will draw 2000 cc of fuel in one cycle.

     

    So assuming a Toyota Corona is a 2.0-liter engine and has four (4 )cylinders we can determine how much air o/ fuel each cylinder draws in as the piston moves from TDC to BDC.

     

    We divide 2000 cc by the number of cylinders.

     

    2000/ 4 =  500 cc

     

    This simply means each cylinder will draw in 500 cubic centimetres of air or air/fuel mixture as the piston moves from TDC to BDC.

     

     

    How engine capacity affects vehicle performance

     

    The engine capacity plays an important role in determining various engine outputs such as engine power, torque, and mileage.

     

    The bigger the engine capacity, the more the power, torque, and gas it "chews."

     

    However, the incorporation of VVT-i systems on some bigger capacity engines has improved both the engine performance and fuel consumption.

    1. External combustion (E.C.) Engine

    2. Internal Combustion (I.C.) Engine

    1. External combustion (E.C.) Engine

     

    It is an engine in which the combustion of gasoline takes place in the backyard of the engine. In this kind of engine, heat, which is generated with the aid of the burning of gas, is used to convert the water or other low-boiling temperature fluid into steam. This excessively stressed steam was used to rotate a turbine. In this engine, we can use all solid, liquid, and gaseous fuels. These engines are usually used in locomotives, ships, the era of electric power, etc.



     

    Advantages of E.C. engine-

     

    In these engines, the beginning torque is normally high.

     

    Because of exterior combustion, we can use more cost-effective fuels as well as strong fuel.

     

    They are more flexible than interior combustion engines.

     

     

    2. Internal Combustion (I.C.) Engine

     

    It is an engine in which combustion of gas takes place inside the engine. When the gasoline burns inside the engine cylinder, it generates an excessive temperature and pressure. This excessive stress pressure is exerted on the piston (a gadget that strikes the interior of the cylinder and transmits the strain pressure to the crank via the use of a connecting rod), which is used to rotate the wheels of a vehicle. In these engines, we can use solely gases and excessively unstable gasoline like petrol, diesel. These engines are usually used in the car industry, technology of electric powered energy, etc.

     


    Advantages of I.C. engine-

     

    It has its usual excessive effectiveness over the E.C. engine.

     

    These engines are compact and require much less space.

     

    The initial price of an IC engine is lower than that of an EC engine.

     

    This engine starts off with no problems due to the fact that it makes excessive use of unstable fuel.
